Married October 19, 2019
There were so many highlights on Maddy and Brad’s day, it’s hard to think of just one that sums it all up. I think of a 1969 Camaro, puppy love, unexpected rain, and a cake made to look like, get this, a RZR dune buggy.
Let’s start at the beginning. Maddy had booked us way back in January and we did their engagement shoot this past summer. I already knew them as really nice, laid-back people who love to travel and love the outdoors (seriously: their dream date would be moose hunting in Alaska). Maddy is in human resources/logistics and Brad is a warehouse manager. They met on campus at the University of the Cumberlands and, three and a half years later, they were ready to tie the knot.
The ceremony was at a pretty church in Williamsburg. Brad didn’t want to see Maddy before the wedding, so, instead of a First Look, they each stood against one corner of a brick wall, held hands and gave each other gifts. Maddy gave Brad an engraved watch, and Brad gave Maddy a picture frame with a dog collar wrapped around it. The picture was of an adorable grey lab puppy, which he had bought for her as a surprise. So sweet! She immediately started crying (who wouldn’t?). They will pick up their new pup after they get home from their honeymoon.
Maddy, who is originally from Indiana, has two dads, and she did a First Look with both of them, which was emotional, especially for her stepdad. Then, her biological dad walked her down the aisle, and her stepdad officiated the wedding! So sweet.
After the I dos, Maddy and Brad sped off in a white 1969 Camaro — it had belonged to Brad’s late uncle and Brad and his dad have fixed it up — and headed to Brad’s family farm to take pictures. By then, rain was sprinkling a little bit, but we made do, and the wedding party was really good-natured about it. We ended up getting such good shots that really captured the atmosphere of the day.
The ceremony took place in The Corbin Center, which is a community center. Normally, the space isn’t too exciting, but they did such an amazing job decorating everything to really make the room special. They incorporated antiques everywhere (the cake was on an antique vanity) and they even had a separate section displaying the take-home gifts. The gifts were individually-wrapped dog biscuits “given” to guests by Maddy and Brad’s lab, Luke. I love that idea! My Lucy and Bokeh were sure happy with me when I got home. Ha!
The ceremony was a really big party. There was dancing, a great meal with pulled pork and mac and cheese, and, yep, a bit of bourbon. Ha! The groom’s cake was made to look like a RZR because one of their favorite things to do is go riding, especially on Black Mountain in Harlan. Their other fave thing is to travel and so off they went to Hawaii after their wedding. So jealous!
